Overview
The St. Louis Summer Associates learn through experience. Throughout the course of the summer they are presented with challenging responsibilities and opportunities. The law students work alongside our Partners and Associates, contributing to actual trials; participating in the structuring, negotiating, and documenting of business transactions; and contributing to client conferences. Our goal is to provide our Summer Associates with a stimulating, "real world" experience so they are fully prepared to take on the responsibilities of an Associate Attorney.
The Summer Associates receive constructive feedback about their work product directly from the lawyers with whom they work. Each student also is paired with a mentor who is responsible for providing guidance and training throughout the summer. The mentor/mentee relationship helps Summer Associates take advantage of their summer experience and prepares them for their Husch Blackwell Sanders careers. The St. Louis Summer Program has Summer Program Coordinators who are responsible for distributing work to the Summer Associates. The Coordinators formally review the students at least twice over the course of the summer.
Besides working together preparing for a trial or negotiating a business transaction, Summer Associates have many opportunities to become acquainted with our attorneys. Summer Associates are invited to practice group lunches, which provide information about the scope of our specific areas of legal practice. Summer Associates are also invited to lunch with attorneys, either individually or in small groups. Our Summer Associates are not required to work around the clock – numerous social activities are planned throughout the summer. We invite Summer Associates to cheer on the World Series Champion Cardinals at the new Busch Stadium, and we host several other "get to know each other" activities.
Our Summer Program is sized to match the number of openings we have for permanent Associates, a policy that distinguishes us from most other law firms. This means an Associate position is open when we offer a place in our Summer Program. Our class of Summer Associates grows each year, consistent with our continued growth as a firm.
